(HealthDay News) -- Indoor air may actually harbor more hazardous pollutants than outdoor air, the National Safety Council says.

Here are its recommendations for how to keep your home's air safer:

  • Keep your car and home smoke-free.
  • Control moisture, and clean up any mold problems.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep your home clean.
  • Identify and get rid of any sources of lead.
  • Make sure your home is properly ventilated.
  • Change furnace filters regularly and keep air ducts clean.
  • Keep houseplants to help purify the air.
